Birthday Party Denia — Blow Out the Candles at Sea

Yes — every birthday charter we run in Denia is a private hire. The boat, the route, the music and the pace belong to your party for the whole trip. No shared decks, no strangers photobombing the cake moment, no fixed programme. It costs more per head than a ticketed cruise and it is a different product entirely: a floating private venue rather than a seat on someone else's schedule.

Children are welcome at any age — life jackets are on board for every guest including the small ones, and the skipper will point out which stretches of the day suit them best. On numbers: under Spanish maritime rules a vessel carrying more than 12 passengers moves into the full passenger-ship regime, so most charter boats on this coast take up to 12 guests — and the skipper and crew do not count towards that number. For bigger birthdays we either move you to a vessel certified for more or run two boats along the coast together, which children treat as a regatta whether you ask them to or not. Please do — a birthday boat without cake is just a boat. Bring your own and we will keep it cool and stage the candle moment out of the wind, or ask us to arrange the cake for you (included on the Celebration package). Your own drinks and picnic food are welcome on every package; coolers, ice and glassware are on board, and we only ask you to keep glass bottles to a minimum on deck. On the bigger packages we handle catering entirely — boards, paella at anchor, or full menus. Dietary requirements and surprise logistics: just tell us when you book.

Not legally, and we would rather you heard it from us than from a municipal inspector. Denia's beach ordinance prohibits cooking and catering on the beaches, so the birthday barbecue on the sand is a fine waiting to happen — minor breaches run up to €750. The workable versions are better anyway: eat on board, where everything is allowed and the view keeps changing, or take a table in town afterwards — Denia has been a UNESCO City of Gastronomy since 2015 and the old town is a short walk from the marina. We are happy to arrange either.

On the water in the daytime, absolutely — run your own playlist, and the skipper manages volume near beaches and other boats as a matter of courtesy. Evenings work beautifully too, with one rule worth knowing: Denia's beach ordinance requires that music not disturb others and imposes total silence after midnight. In practice our evening charters are back in the marina well before that becomes anyone's problem, and the party moves to a restaurant or a terrace in town. If you want a late finish, we will plan the timings so the fun and the ordinance never meet.

You can, and it is the prettiest slot of the day — but here is the honest geometry, because plenty of listings get it wrong. At Denia the sun does not drop into the sea: through the season it sets towards the west-northwest, and this coastline faces north-northeast, so the sun always goes down behind the land. What you actually get is better than a horizon dot — as the light drops, the limestone of the Montgo, the castle above the town and the cliffs of Cap de Sant Antoni catch the low sun and the afterglow, going gold and then pink while you watch from the water. We time evening charters so the cake and the photos land exactly in that light.

There are, and the skipper carries all of them so you do not have to. Spain's coastal regulations prohibit navigation inside buoyed bathing zones; off unbuoyed beaches, boats stay 200 metres out (50 metres off rocky shore) or cross at 3 knots maximum. Denia's own ordinance bans anchoring inside the bathing zone, and from 2 April 2026 a new national rule (RD 191/2026) bans anchoring over seagrass meadows — even over nearby sand if the chain or the boat's swing would disturb them. Inside the Cap de Sant Antoni marine reserve, anchoring is banned outright, so we use the authorised mooring buoys there. What this means for the party: nothing except clean water — the skipper knows every legal, sandy-bottomed anchorage and picks the best one for the day.

June to September is the reliable heart of the season — AEMET's normals give July an average of 25.5 °C with only 4 mm of rain in the whole month. May and October are quieter and better value but more changeable, and late September into October carries this coast's known risk of short, violent autumn storms, so autumn birthdays should hold a flexible date if they can. One local wrinkle: in early July (3–12 July in 2026) the Bous a la Mar festival takes over the fishing quay — a timber bullring goes up with its open side facing the harbour and the town fills to the brim. Wonderful to see, busier to book around; tell us your date and we will plan accordingly.

We reschedule or refund, your choice — a birthday is movable in a way a wedding is not, and most groups simply slide to the next good day. What actually cancels trips here is not rain but the levante, an easterly blow whose real problem, as the regional emergency service puts it, is the sea state it raises rather than the wind itself. The skipper makes the call early enough for you to re-plan the day, and in July and August it rarely comes to that.

No licence, no experience — every birthday charter comes with a professional skipper, and your whole party are guests. For nervous guests or anyone prone to seasickness, two adjustments solve most of it: choose a catamaran, whose twin hulls barely roll compared with a monohull, and take a morning slot, when the sea is usually at its flattest before the afternoon breeze fills in. Close to this coast in summer the water is generally gentle, and the swim stops are in sheltered spots.
