Stag Do Calpe — The Stag for Groups Who Actually Like the Sea

Private. The boat is your group's for the whole trip — no strangers, no shared decks, no schedule other than the one you and the skipper agree. That costs a bit more per head than a ticketed booze cruise, and it buys you the two things a stag actually needs: control of the music and nobody else's stag on board.

Depends on the boat, and there is a hard legal line behind it. Under Spanish maritime rules, a vessel carrying more than 12 passengers moves into the full passenger-ship regime — so most charter boats on this coast are certified for up to 12 guests. The good news: skipper and crew do not count towards the 12, so you never lose spots to the people running the boat. Groups bigger than that either take a vessel certified for more or split across two boats running the coast together — which turns into a race by the second swim stop every single time. Modest, and we would rather tell you that now than have you find out at 11 p.m. Calpe is a working town with a largely retired foreign population and, in August, a heavily Spanish family crowd; it has good restaurants and a handful of late bars, not a strip. The big-night machine of this coast is Benidorm, about half an hour away. Plenty of stags do it as a split: the boat day, the swim stops and the BBQ in Calpe, then a Benidorm night if the group still has legs. If your whole weekend is meant to be clubs, Calpe is the wrong base and we will say so — but as a boat-day destination it beats Benidorm's water hands down.

Yes and yes. On Lads Basic, bring whatever the group drinks — coolers and ice are provided, and a supermarket run that morning is the economical move for a big group. Premium and VIP include an open bar, with VIP stepping up to premium spirits. Two house rules: keep glass to a minimum on deck (bare feet, moving boat — you can do the maths), and the skipper has the final say on anyone getting in the water. Nobody swims judgement-impaired on our boats; the sea does not grade on a curve.

The day is built around the water, not the bar. Swim stops in clear coves, snorkelling gear on every boat, paddleboards and kayaks on Premium and VIP, and the BBQ cooked at anchor while everyone dries off. Add-ons we can arrange include a photographer to capture the carnage and jet ski sessions with a licensed operator. The groups that rate the day highest are the ones who treat the drinks as the accompaniment and the sea as the event.

June, July and September are the sweet spot; the AEMET normals give July an average of 25.5 °C with only 4 mm of rain across the month. May and October are cheaper and quieter but more changeable — and late September into October is this coast's season for short, violent autumn storms, so build in a buffer if you book then. For summer weekend dates, four to six weeks ahead is sensible for groups under 12 and longer for anything bigger.

The skipper calls it, and you reschedule or get a refund — your pick. The thing that actually kills a day here is not rain but a levante blow: an easterly whose danger, as the Valencian emergency service puts it, is the sea state it raises rather than the wind strength. A stag in a two-metre swell is fifteen men regretting the BBQ, so we simply do not run it. In high summer this is rare; we would rather you know the policy than need it.

A few, and the skipper carries them all so you do not have to. Spain's state coastal regulations ban boats from buoyed swimming zones entirely, and where beaches are unbuoyed, there is a 200-metre strip (50 metres off rocky shore) with a 3-knot limit. Calpe's own coastal ordinance makes anchoring inside the swim zones or mooring to someone else's buoy an offence with fines up to €1,500, and anchoring over Posidonia seagrass is banned across the whole region. Ashore, keep the noise down after 22:00 — the town's coexistence rules put a €750 fine on late-night music, singing and shouting in the street, and the whole group can be held liable, not just the loudest man. None of this touches a normal stag day; it is the frame that keeps this coast worth coming to.

The skipper handles the boat, the anchoring rules and the weather; your crew's only jobs are the playlist and making sure the groom gets home aboard.

Yes — jet ski sessions with a licensed local operator, extra water toys, a photographer, or paella instead of (or as well as) the BBQ. We can also time the last hour of a VIP charter for the golden light, when the low sun front-lights the Peñón and the limestone glows orange — an underrated closing scene for the group photo.
