Through the season the sun sets to the west-northwest, which at Javea puts it squarely behind the Montgó; in high summer it disappears behind the mountain while still well up, so there is no moment where sun meets water, from any distance offshore. What you get instead is the reason to come: the golden light hitting the mountain, the castle and the Cap de Sant Antoni cliffs face-on, then a long copper afterglow over a flattening sea. Guests who arrive expecting a postcard horizon leave having photographed a glowing mountain instead, and we have yet to meet one who felt short-changed.

The stretch of evening after the sun has gone behind the massif but before the light leaves the sky. The sun stops being a glare and becomes a colourist: the Montgó and the headlands hold the warm light long after the direct sun is gone, shifting gold to copper to rose, while the sea — usually at its calmest by then — mirrors the whole performance. It lasts long enough to be savoured rather than snatched, which is more than most horizon sunsets can claim: those end the moment the disc drops. Ours lingers.

Outside high summer. The sun's setting angle swings through the season, and in spring and autumn it sits lower and further round before it reaches the mountain — so in those months you watch it longer, and the colours run deeper. In June, July and August the Montgó claims it early and the evening belongs entirely to the afterglow. Both versions are worth the boat; they are simply different shows. It depends on your date, deliberately. Sunset moves by more than two hours across the charter season, so we do not run a fixed timetable — we set your departure so that you are out, anchored and facing the right way before the light peaks, with the full afterglow still ahead of you. Midsummer evenings board around half past seven; spring and autumn run earlier. When you book, you get the exact boarding time for your specific evening, and the skipper adjusts on the day if the sky is promising something special.

Yes, and an evening swim is one of the quiet highlights — the sea holds the day's warmth well into the evening in summer, and going in while the light turns amber is something a daytime trip cannot offer. The usual rules on where a boat may stop still apply after office hours: no entering buoyed bathing zones, distance kept off the beaches, and anchoring only on clean sand, away from the seagrass meadows that Spanish law now protects nationwide. The skipper handles all of it; you handle the getting out before the towel-and-blanket portion of the evening begins.

Private, always — which matters more in the evening than at any other hour. A shared sunset cruise is a crowd photographing over each other's shoulders; a private one is your people, engines off, and actual silence while the mountain does its thing. It costs more than a ticket on a group boat, but the thing being sold is different: not transport to a view, but an evening that belongs to you. Couples, families and small groups of friends all book it; the common thread is wanting the quiet version.

The Proposal package is planned with you in advance: where the ring lives until the moment, when the moment comes — we time it for the best light on the mountain, engines off, music down or up as you prefer — flowers and styling aboard beforehand, and a photographer arranged if you want the moment caught without a phone in your hand. The skipper has done this before and gives nothing away. One practical note from experience: plan the words for before the swim, not after. Wet-haired proposals also get accepted, but the photos divide opinion.

Cloud is a judgement call we make honestly with you: a part-clouded sky often produces the most dramatic afterglow of all, and we will say so when it is true — but if the evening promises nothing but grey, we will offer to move you to another date rather than sail you into disappointment. Weather that stops the boat outright is another matter: the levante, the easterly whose real menace, as the Valencian emergency service puts it, is the sea it raises rather than the wind itself. If the skipper cancels, you reschedule or take a full refund, your choice. Summer evenings are the most reliable of the year — that is precisely why the season works.

Yes. The cava is on us; beyond that, bring what the evening calls for — coolers, ice and glassware are aboard, and we ask only that actual glass stays minimal on a bare-foot deck. If you would rather arrive holding nothing, the Afterglow package adds tapas and a grazing board, and we can arrange more or better on request, from a specific label of cava to a birthday cake smuggled aboard for a sunset ambush. Tell us the plan; the boat will be in on it.

The evening is built around the light rather than distance, and the light is the bay's: we position where the Montgó, the castle and the cliffs of Cap de Sant Antoni line up, and those cliffs — the seaward face of the marine reserve — are the best-lit rock on the coast at that hour. We view them from the water without anchoring: the reserve's rules ban anchoring outright (along with fishing and motorised water sports; the decree sets no speed limit, whatever the internet repeats). For the stop itself the skipper tucks into calm, legal water with the whole panorama in view. Short version: you see the reserve at its golden best, and it stays exactly as protected as it was when you arrived.
