Wedding Charter Alicante — Say It on the Water, Sign It Ashore

No — and any website that says otherwise is selling you a story. The Spanish Civil Code permits a marriage aboard a vessel only in one narrow circumstance: when one of the parties is in danger of death. Outside that, no captain, however gold-braided, can create a legal marriage at sea. This is why we never sell a 'legal wedding at sea' and never will. What we sell instead is the structure that works everywhere in Spain: the legal ceremony ashore before an authorised celebrant, and the symbolic ceremony — vows, rings, music, everything your guests will actually remember — on the water. Done in that order, you lose nothing and risk nothing.

The list changed recently, so beware of stale advice. Since a reform that took effect in April 2025, a civil marriage in Spain can be celebrated by the mayor or a delegated councillor, by a judicial secretary (Letrado de la Administración de Justicia) or a notary, by the officer in charge of the Civil Registry, or — abroad — by a Spanish diplomatic or consular officer. The justice of the peace, who appears on countless older wedding guides, has been removed from the list. One more wrinkle worth knowing early: if the Civil Registry processes your marriage file, the wedding must then take place before the mayor or councillor — the notary route is only open if a notary handled the file from the start. In other words, the path is fixed at the beginning, so decide it before you book anything else.

Alicante marries couples in the Salón Azul — the town hall's blue stateroom, not the plenary chamber — on Saturdays only, in eight half-hour slots, with room for up to 56 guests. Booking for a year's slots opens on the first business day of October, and the popular months go quickly. There is a blackout during the Hogueras fiesta in June, when the building and the city are otherwise engaged. On cost: the town hall publishes no fee for the ceremony — confirm the current position with them directly when you book. And note their own rule: the room is for the official civil ceremony only, with no symbolic rites or other celebrations permitted in it — which is precisely why the boat exists. The formalities take half an hour ashore; the wedding, the part you will remember, happens on the water.

Whatever you want it to — that is the entire point of a symbolic ceremony. Most couples anchor in calm water, cut the engine, and exchange personal vows before a friend, family member or celebrant of their choosing; rings, readings, music and any tradition you care to import are all welcome, because no legal formula constrains you. Some couples time it for golden hour with the castle behind them; others prefer the open horizon. The crew handles the boat invisibly, the sound system carries your voices to the stern rail, and the toast is poured the moment you kiss. Legally it changes nothing — that happened ashore — emotionally it is the wedding.

Up to twelve passengers on a standard charter — that number comes from international shipping rules adopted into Spanish law, at which point a vessel needs passenger-ship certification; crew are not counted. For larger weddings we arrange certified vessels for bigger numbers, or a two-boat format where the inner circle sails on the ceremony boat and the wider party follows alongside — which photographs wonderfully. A practical note: the town hall's Salón Azul holds 56, so many couples do the legal ceremony with everyone, then take the closest people afloat. Give us your guest list early; boat capacity is the constraint the whole plan hangs from.

Evening — but let us set honest expectations, because the light here behaves in a particular way. The sun sets over the land to the west-northwest, so the castle takes elegant side-light in the final hour rather than glowing head-on, and from the Cabo de las Huertas side you can frame it as a clean silhouette instead — a genuinely striking wedding image. Because hills stand inland, the sun slips away roughly ten minutes before true sunset, so we time the golden-hour anchorage slightly earlier than the almanac says. Then, after dark, the castle's floodlights come on, and the return to the marina gives you a lit fortress over black water. Three different pictures in one evening, all real.

You can build an unforgettable wedding around them — with one caveat. The town hall pauses its Salón Azul ceremonies during the Hogueras fiesta (20–24 June), so the legal ceremony must sit outside those exact days. But here is the move for couples who love spectacle: the city's international fireworks competition runs on the nights of 25–29 June, fired at midnight over the seafront. A wedding charter that dines at sea and stays out for the midnight show gets a fireworks finale over the bay that no wedding planner could buy — because almost nobody realises it can be watched from the water. Those dates book out far ahead, on land and at sea alike, so commit early.

We plan for this from day one, because a wedding cannot simply move to next Saturday. First, the season helps: the Alicante bay is sheltered and summer conditions are dependably kind, so genuine cancellations are rare. Second, the skipper holds authority over safety, and if the sea state makes the anchored ceremony uncomfortable, the fallback is a calmer cove or a ceremony alongside in the marina with the celebration cruise after — the day bends rather than breaks. Third, terms are agreed in writing before you sign: if a charter must be cancelled outright for weather, you choose between rescheduling and a full refund. And your coordinator watches the forecast with you all week, so decisions happen calmly, days out.

Couples who married legally elsewhere — a registry office at home, a consulate, an earlier quiet signing — often use the boat for the full wedding experience, and that works beautifully: with the legal box already ticked, the entire day afloat is yours and no Spanish formality is involved at all. This is our most popular structure for international couples. What we cannot do is stage anything that pretends to be a Spanish legal ceremony afloat, and we would counsel against any operator who offers one. Work backwards from the legal date, because that is the scarce resource. Alicante's Saturday slots open for booking on the first business day of October and the desirable months thin out fast — so couples aiming for a specific summer Saturday should move that week, then fix the boat immediately after. For the charter itself, six months ahead gives a full choice of vessels; peak Saturdays in June (mind the Hogueras blackout), July and September go earliest, and anything over twelve guests needs extra lead time for a certified vessel.
