Under the Spanish Civil Code a ship's captain can only conduct a marriage when one of the parties is in danger of death, which is not the wedding most couples have in mind. What works, and what nearly every couple at sea in Spain actually does, is a symbolic ceremony aboard — vows, rings, celebrant, all of it — with the short legal formality completed ashore, before or after. Your guests witness the real emotional event on the water; the state gets its paperwork on land. Nobody has ever felt less married for it.

This changed recently, and most wedding websites have not caught up. Since the reform in force from April 2025, a civil marriage in Spain is celebrated by the mayor or a delegated councillor, a court clerk (Letrado de la Administración de Justicia) or a notary — plus consular officers abroad and the Civil Registry official. The justice-of-the-peace route ('Juez de Paz') that older articles still list has been removed from the law. One more wrinkle worth knowing: the route gets fixed at the start of the paperwork — if the Civil Registry processes your file, the wedding must be before the mayor or councillor; the notary option only exists if a notary handled the file from the beginning. Decide the route first, then start the file.

We watch the forecast with you from days out and make the call as early as it can responsibly be made. Summer is remarkably safe — July averages about 4 mm of rain in total — while autumn carries the Mediterranean's short-storm risk. The wind that matters here is the easterly levante, which builds swell; the bay usually keeps a sheltered side and the skipper plans the anchorage around it, with the calm water behind the old-town headland as a fallback. If the day genuinely cannot run, we move it or refund it. No couple gets sent to sea to honour a booking.

Either, or any mix. We work with local florists, caterers, photographers and musicians who know these boats and this light, and everything is confirmed with you in writing before the day. Equally, your own photographer, celebrant or band boards at no extra charge — we just brief them on the boat beforehand. The only rule we hold firmly: décor must attach without damage and leave without a trace, and nothing goes overboard, including confetti. The sea is the venue; we keep it looking the part.

May, June and September are the sweet spot — warm, reliable and slightly gentler on budgets than high summer. July and August are hot, dry and busy, and fiesta weeks are worth checking before you fix a date: Fogueres de Sant Joan fills the beaches 19–24 June, the Virgen del Carmen sea procession crosses the bay in mid-July, and early November brings the Fiestas Mayores. None of these prevent a wedding — fireworks here launch from land, not the sea — but they affect hotel prices and guest logistics, so we flag them during planning.

A November wedding can genuinely work — this is one of mainland Spain's mildest coasts, averaging over 18 °C across the year, and late-season light on the skyline is beautiful. Think ceremony and reception afloat rather than a swim day, with jackets on standby and the golden-hour portraits earlier in the afternoon. Autumn also carries a higher chance of rescheduling for weather, so we build flexibility into late-season bookings from the start. Deep winter is possible on calm days, but we will be honest with you about the odds month by month.

For a summer Saturday, six to twelve months ahead is realistic — boats, florists and photographers all book out in season. The process is deliberately simple: one enquiry, one coordinator, a written proposal with every line itemised, then a planning thread covering ceremony, catering, music, transfers and timings. You approve each piece as it is confirmed.
