Four islands, boats at every price, all year

When the Mediterranean winds down for winter, the Canaries keep going.

We have boats at every price across the Canary Islands, from sailing boats at about €220 a day on Gran Canaria and about €345 on Tenerife to motorboats from about €560, with catamarans and motor yachts on request. Send your island, date and group, and within 2 hours in business hours you get available boats and prices, free and with no obligation.

The season is the real selling point. January highs sit around 21 °C at the island airports, against 15.4 °C at Palma, and rain totals just 98 to 151 mm a year. About a third of boat searches here fall between November and March, so popular dates go early, in January as much as in July.

Each island has its own great day out: the Los Gigantes cliffs on Tenerife, the sheltered south-west of Gran Canaria, Papagayo and La Graciosa on Lanzarote, Isla de Lobos on Fuerteventura. Your own private boat, your group only, your music, and a skipper included. Tell us which island you're on, and we'll find you a boat.

What each island is good for

Four different coasts, and a good reason to try more than one.

Tenerife: the widest choice

Mostly sail, with motorboats too, so this is the island for a real sailing day. The Los Gigantes cliffs and the leeward south-west coast give a day out an obvious shape, and pilot whales and dolphins live just offshore all year.

Gran Canaria: a sheltered south-west

AEMET describes lighter, sometimes variable winds on the south-west coast under the trade winds. That makes for a calm day out from Puerto de Mogán or Pasito Blanco, finished with a sunset in one of the prettiest marinas in the islands.

Lanzarote: Papagayo or La Graciosa

Papagayo is at the south tip beside Marina Rubicón, and La Graciosa lies in a large marine reserve off the north. Pick one per day, or come back for the other. Boats here run a little smaller, so tell us your headcount first.

Fuerteventura: come for Isla de Lobos

The draw is Isla de Lobos off Corralejo, where every guest who lands gets a free permit online, available three days ahead. With turquoise water around Corralejo and Morro Jable far to the south, it's a big island to explore by boat.

Why the Canaries are different

A winter season, resident whales, and an easy answer on licences.

A winter day on the water here is an ordinary pleasure, not a dare. Think of it as a sunny day out in February, when most of Europe has its coat on: airport stations average January highs of 20.6 to 21.7 °C. Go in the morning, stay for lunch at anchor, and wear a layer for the ride home.

Pilot whales and bottlenose dolphins live off south-west Tenerife all year, one of very few resident populations in the world. For a trip dedicated to them, the whale-watching page has boats flying the yellow Blue Boat flag, with a guide on board, in the Teno-Rasca protected strip.

On licences, the answer is simple: with a skipper on board, nobody needs one, and a skipper comes with every offer. Your skipper also picks a stop clear of the seagrass in protected strips such as Teno-Rasca and Mogán, so you just bring a swimsuit.

Winter on the water: the Canaries' big advantage

AEMET's 1981-2010 normals at the four island airports show January average highs between 20.6 and 21.7 °C, annual rain of only 98 to 151 mm and summers with hardly a drop. Palma Puerto, by comparison, averages a January high of 15.4 °C and 449 mm of rain a year. If you want a boat day in February, this is where to have it.

The trade winds are the local signature, and they're strongest in summer, when they blow over 90% of the time. South-west leeward coasts are generally calmer, so that's where your day starts, and your skipper picks the sheltered stretch on the morning itself. One coast, one great day, whatever the month.

Canary Islands boat hire: common questions

Send your island, date and group. You get available boats and prices within 2 hours in business hours, free and with no obligation. Choose the boat you like, and you're set.

Yes, asking is free and doesn't commit you to anything. You pay only when you book a boat.

No, not with a skipper, and every offer includes one. Your group can leave the licences at home. Driving a rented motorboat yourself does take one, at any size, so say so in your request if you hold it.

From about €220 a day for a sailing boat on Gran Canaria, €285 on Lanzarote, €345 on Tenerife and €355 on Fuerteventura, with motorboats from about €560 on Tenerife, going by public listings. Each offer gives you the full price for your island and date, with the skipper on board.

Professional skippers from local charter companies on each island.

Tenerife for the widest choice or a sailing day. Gran Canaria if a sheltered south-west coast matters most. Lanzarote if the goal is Papagayo or La Graciosa. Fuerteventura for Isla de Lobos. In practice, the best island is the one you're already staying on.

Yes, and it's one of the best reasons to come. January highs at the airport stations are around 21 °C, and about a third of searches fall between November and March. Start from the leeward side, and keep a second date in mind if you can.

A day is better spent on one coast. The channels between the islands tend to be rougher, so you'd spend your time crossing instead of swimming. If a crossing really matters to you, mention it in your request.

Yes. Off south-west Tenerife, pilot whales and bottlenose dolphins live all year, and the whale-watching page has trips on boats flying the Blue Boat flag. Wild animals keep their own schedule, but few places in the world give you this many chances.

As early as you can for a popular date, including in winter, since there's no quiet spell to rely on. Send your date and a backup, and you'll see what's free within 2 hours in business hours.
