Your own boat on Formentera

We have plenty of boats for rent in Formentera at every price: sailboats from about €285 a summer day, motorboats from about €400, RIBs from about €425 and catamarans from about €930. The typical boat here is about 6 metres long and takes 7 people, just right for a small group.

This is the water people cross the Mediterranean for: very clear turquoise shallows over pale sand, and the seagrass meadows between Ibiza and Formentera that UNESCO made World Heritage in 1999. Your own private boat puts you right in the middle of it, with your group only, your music and a skipper included, so nobody needs a licence.

Hire at La Savina and skip the crossing, or come over from Ibiza town, about 10 nautical miles (NM) from off Botafoch point. Stay for the evening too: off Ses Illetes the sun goes down over open sea. Tell us your date and headcount, and we'll find you a boat.

Where you hire, swim and stop

Distances are approximate. Your skipper's track will fit the day.

La Savina

The island's harbour and your way in from Ibiza, home of the Marina de Formentera. Board here and the swimming starts close by, with no crossing to fit into your day.

The crossing from Ibiza

From off Botafoch point it's about 10 NM to La Savina, threading the Freus west of s'Espalmador; from inside the marina, about 12 NM. At 20 knots that's 30 to 36 minutes of open water and rising excitement.

Ses Illetes

The name everyone wants, about 9 NM from off Botafoch to its west side. Your skipper finds clear sand where you can stop, and in the evening the sun goes down over open sea.

Caló de s'Oli

An official buoy zone in the southern part of the bay on Formentera. Your boat ties up to a buoy, and all that's left to do is jump in.

Bahía de s'Alga, s'Espalmador

The official buoy field on s'Espalmador, the one islet in the park where you can go ashore, by its entry and exit channels. It feels a long way from anywhere.

Playa de Ses Salines

The third official zone, on the Ibiza side, and a superb first stop if you're crossing from Ibiza town. Tie up, swim, then carry on over the channel.

No licence? No problem

A skipper comes with every offer, and the small boats here make the short course worthwhile too.

Nobody in your group needs a licence, because a skipper is included in every offer. They drive, they anchor, they know the sand from the seagrass, and you get the whole day in and out of the water. Searching for boat rental in Formentera without a licence? This is the answer.

Rather drive yourself? Any rented motorboat needs a licence at any size, so tell us what you hold in your request. Your offer shows what you can take out on your own ticket.

The licencia de navegación is a course of about 6 hours: 2 of theory and at least 4 of practice, for boats up to 6 m, by day, within 2 NM of a port, a marina or shelter. That matches the small boats on this island nicely, though the crossing from Ibiza is one for your skipper.

Good to know

Your skipper finds the sand

Boats here anchor on sand, and your skipper reads the bottom so you don't have to. You get a clean swim stop, and the seagrass that keeps this coast famous stays as it is.

Buoys make it easy

Official buoys at Caló de s'Oli, Bahía de s'Alga and Playa de Ses Salines are booked through the Ports IB platform. Ask your skipper who's booking if a buoy stop is part of your day.

Bigger groups take two boats

Boats carry up to 12 guests, with crew on top, and most here take about 7. A larger group adds a second boat and shares the anchorage.

Best months on Formentera

May to October is your window, with highs averaging 30.3 °C in August at nearby Ibiza airport. High summer brings the warmest days and the longest evenings off Ses Illetes, with the sun going down over open sea.

Either side of the peak, prices fall and the anchorages have more room, with motorboats from about €300 a day and RIBs from about €330 off-season. Send your date in any of those months and see what it costs.
