Two great days, one boat of your own

Papagayo's sandy coves or La Graciosa's marine reserve: pick your end of the island.

Boat hire in Lanzarote runs from sailing boats at about €285 a day to motorboats, RIBs and catamarans on request, and it comes down to two names: Papagayo in the south and La Graciosa in the north. Give us your date and group size, and you'll have available boats and prices within 2 hours in business hours, free and with no obligation.

The boat is entirely yours: your group only, your music, and a skipper included, so nobody needs a licence. Papagayo means boats at anchor off the sand at the island's south tip, with Marina Rubicón right beside it. La Graciosa means a 70,700-hectare marine reserve off the north coast. Few days out in the Canaries feel further from the crowds.

The two sit at opposite ends of the island, so it's one or the other in a day, and plenty of people come back for the second. Tell us which day you have in mind, and we'll find you a boat at the right end. Popular dates go early, in winter as well as summer.

Where you can go

From the sand at Papagayo to the islets of the north.

Papagayo

The beaches at the south tip, near Marina Rubicón, inside the Los Ajaches monument. Your skipper finds the right spot off the sand, and the rest of the day is swimming and lunch on deck.

La Graciosa

Off the north of Lanzarote, in a marine reserve of 70,700 hectares. Say it's your goal when you send your date, and your offer confirms the route and the stops. A day to remember.

Marina Rubicón, Playa Blanca

550 berths up to 50 m, plus a quay for boats up to 90 m, with boat hire and excursions among its services. For a boat trip from Playa Blanca, this is where you start, with Papagayo right next door.

Puerto del Carmen

A big name for boat trips on the east coast. Staying here? Name it in your request, and your offer shows where you board, whether that's nearby or just along the coast at Puerto Calero.

Puerto Calero

A marina just along the coast from Puerto del Carmen, on the official ports list. A handy and good-looking place to start a day on the east coast.

Marina Lanzarote, Arrecife

380 berths in the island's capital, on the east coast. Convenient if you're staying in town, with the whole of that coast ahead of you.

Montaña Clara and Alegranza

The volcanic islets north of La Graciosa, in open blue sea. They make an extraordinary sight from the deck of your own boat on a long day north.

No licence? No problem

A skipper comes with every offer, and smaller boats suit small groups perfectly.

A skipper comes with every offer, so nobody aboard has to hold a licence. That's the simple answer to boat hire in Lanzarote without a licence: you take the sunbed, and your skipper takes the wheel.

Boats here are a little smaller: the median takes 6 people and is about 9 m long. That makes for an easy, intimate day for a couple or a family. If you're 8 or more, say so first, and we'll find you a boat that fits. Catamarans are the natural pick for larger groups.

Hold a licence and want to drive? Any rented motorboat needs one, whatever its size, so include it in your request. The short route is the licencia de navegación: 2 hours in a classroom plus 4 or more on the water, for boats up to 6 m, in daylight, within 2 NM of a port, marina or shelter.

Good to know

One end of the island per day

Papagayo and La Graciosa are at opposite ends, so pick one and start from the marina that suits it. You'll spend your day swimming rather than travelling.

Your skipper picks the stop

Your skipper knows the seagrass strips at La Graciosa and Guasimeta and anchors on clear ground, with any permits and the local reserve rules taken care of.

Dolphins and whales

If dolphins show up, your skipper keeps a respectful distance. For a trip built around them, look for a boat flying the yellow Blue Boat flag.

A season that doesn't stop

Lanzarote airport's AEMET normals show January averaging a high of 20.7 °C and August 29.1 °C, the warmest August highs of the four Canary airports. Just 111 mm of rain falls in a year, and June to August record none. About three in ten searches come between November and March.

Wind is part of the island's character, so your skipper plans around it, choosing the sheltered stretch and the best time of day for your swim stop. Keep your date a little flexible, and you'll get the best of the day whatever the month.

Yes. It's a free request with no obligation. You pay only for a boat you go on to book.

Yes, with a skipper, and that's how every offer comes. Nobody aboard needs a licence. Driving a rented motorboat yourself needs one at any size, including the small boats once sold as licence-free.

From about €285 a day for a sailing boat, going by public listings, with motorboats, RIBs and catamarans on request. Send your date and group size, and your offer shows the full price with the skipper on board.

Professional skippers from local charter companies, who know Papagayo and the waters off Playa Blanca.

Yes, that's the natural trip, with Marina Rubicón at Playa Blanca close by. Your skipper picks the stop for the day's wind and the other boats around you.

Better not: they're at opposite ends of the island, so you'd spend the day travelling instead of swimming. Pick one and start from the port that suits it, or book two days and do both properly.

Yes, tell us it's your goal when you send your date. Your offer confirms the route and where the boat stops in the marine reserve.

Yes, on request: a whole catamaran for your group, with no tickets and no strangers. Send your date early if it's a popular one.

No. Wind is a factor all year, and the trade winds are at their steadiest in summer, so winter isn't the problem you might expect. Your skipper picks a sheltered stretch for the day.
