Your own boat on Gran Canaria's calm side
From an easy sailing day to a whole catamaran, on a lee shore made for swimming.
Boat rental in Gran Canaria runs from sailing boats at about €220 a day to motorboats from about €1,360, with catamarans and RIBs on request. Send your date and group, and within 2 hours in business hours you get available boats and prices for that date, free and with no obligation. It's your own private boat, for your group and your music, with a skipper included.
The coast does the rest. AEMET describes the south as the lee of the island under the trade winds, with lighter winds that can even turn variable along the south-west. That's why the ports to know are in the south and south-west: Puerto de Mogán, Puerto Rico and Pasito Blanco. Expect easy swim stops and long lunches at anchor.
It works all year, too. January highs reach about 20.8 °C, and a third of the island's boat searches come between November and March, so popular dates go early in any month. Tell us your date and the resort you're in, and we'll find you a boat nearby.

Ports on the south coast, and one that isn't
Marina figures come from the marinas themselves.
Puerto de Mogán
216 berths: 36 stern-to on the quay for boats up to 45 m, and 180 on four pontoons up to 20 m, with boat rental among the port's own services. A beautiful place to start and finish the day, especially with a pink sky over the masts at sunset.
Pasito Blanco
388 berths for boats from 6 to 45 m, plus 115 dry places. It's a real yachting marina on the south coast, with the calmer water right on its doorstep.
Puerto Rico
A favourite search for boat hire and boat parties, and on the official ports list. Staying here? Name it in your request, and your offer shows where you board, here or in nearby Mogán or Pasito Blanco.
Las Palmas
The capital, on the far side of the island from the leeward south-west. The natural choice if you're staying in the city and want to see it from the water.
Boat trips, catamarans and parties
The things people come here for, on a boat of your own.
A boat trip in Gran Canaria means one private boat for your group on the south-west coast, with a skipper, swim stops and a route chosen for the day's wind. A private catamaran is the same idea on a bigger deck. Many catamaran adverts are shared tours; here you get the whole boat, with nobody else on it.
Boat parties from Puerto Rico and the south are simple on a private boat: a closed group, your playlist and your own swim stops. Hen dos, stag dos and birthdays all work beautifully this way. Say how many of you there are, and we'll find you the right deck. The skipper has the final word on safety, so the day stays fun.
Keep an eye on the water, too: dolphins may well appear. If some show up, your skipper keeps a respectful distance and you enjoy the view from the deck. For a trip built around them, look for boats flying the yellow Blue Boat flag, or see the Tenerife whale-watching page.
Good to know
No licence? No problem
With a skipper on board, nobody in your group needs a licence, and one comes with every offer. Prefer to drive? Any rented motorboat needs a licence, at any size, so mention yours in your request.
Your skipper picks the stop
Your skipper chooses clear sand away from the seagrass strips off Mogán and Playa del Inglés, so a swim stop is always easy, and any permits are taken care of.
Headcount first
The typical boat here takes 10, and up to 12 is the usual ceiling. Tell us your group size first, and a bigger party can take two boats.
Trade winds, season and the sheltered side
AEMET's study of the island gives the clearest picture in the Canaries. Trade winds blow more than 50% of the time in autumn, winter and spring, and more than 90 or 95% in summer. So the secret to calm water here is geography: the south-west sits in the shelter of the island, while the wind speeds up at the north-west and south-east corners.
Gran Canaria airport's normals for 1981-2010 show January averaging a high of 20.8 °C and August 27.5 °C, with just 151 mm of rain a year and none from June to August. If you want sun on deck in the depths of winter, this is one of the few places in Europe that delivers it.
